Parched Tasmanian Countryside

Photos by Frits and Paula

a country road in Tasmania

This is fairly typical of country areas in south eastern Australia during early summer. The introduced grasses used as pasture don’t stand up well to spells of hot dry weather, and a little later in the year farmers must often resort to hand-feeding their animals. Another stratagem is to graze the "long paddock", the green area at the sides of the road.

Dry farmland

As the "dry" continues, grasses become parched. This presents a very real fire hazard.

Cradle Mountain?

Overseas tourist brochures will tell you that "There are no mountains in Australia". If we're talking about height above sea level we have to admit there's some truth in this. Nevertheless, we do have some tallish rocky outcrops!
