There's a continual struggle between those who’d preserve old growth forest and those who’d prefer to change it all into newspaper to be thrown away and added to the world’s rubbish.
Frits is standing at the base of a tree that provides homes and food for dozens of species. Birds and climbing marsupials use the canopy; tiny creatures live in, under and around the bark and roots; butterflies and other insects are nourished by the nectar while their young thrive on the leaves and sap.
Trees with great splits like this one are by no means dying; life and regrowth are going on in the outer layers, and will continue even after exposure to some degree of fire.
They are threatened only by the wood chipping companies.
