Redback spider, side view
The redback spider is part of a genus called the widow spiders, of which the American black widow may be the best known. Redbacks and black widows are similar in appearance. The American black widow is Latrodectus mactans; the Australian redback is Latrodectus hasselti. Although both spiders are seriously venemous, the American black widow has been responsible for no deaths since 1983, nor has any Australian spider caused death since 1979.
This might be a good pont to mention that the white-tailed spider myth is just that: a myth. White tail bites cause pain and itching; they do not make bits of you rot away.
