Jewel Bug

Jewel bug on brambles

A bug is a bug. It's an insect that sucks rather than chewing, and that has wings that are different from those of other insects. Beetles aren't bugs, and spiders aren't bugs. (With the word being used as it often is, as meaning just about anything that's small and alive, I'm waiting for someone to say that a mouse is a bug!)

This is a jewel bug, of which there are many gorgeously coloured varieties. Every year I see a few on our brambles, but as these plants are vigorous and prolific, the little bugs seem to be doing no harm, and what a delight they are to the eyes!
