Sites I Like

Animal Photographs   The link takes you to a list. Click your choice for wonderfully clear close-up pictures of small Australian wildlife—insects, lizards, spiders, frogs and more.

Australian Public Toilets  As the man says in the ads, don't leave home without it. Anyone planning a trip within Australia can find the towns they plan to visit and print out the relevant maps. Makes being in a strange town much more comfortable!

Books   For the text of just about any well-known book (except those still in copyright) this link takes you to Project Gutenberg. This includes classics, children's books, stories like Sherlock Holmes and those by Edgar Allen Poe, all the great poets and playwrights, the sacred works of many religions, histories, everything.

Buying a Computer   Rookies’ site has useful guidelines for Australians buying their first computer.

The Long Yarra Quilt  In 2003 a group of hikers spent three weeks following the Yarra from Port Philip Bay to its source, walking at a leisurely pace and taking numerous photographs. Feeling deeply impressed by the beauty of the river, and realising what a profound influence it had had on uncounted generations, Kate Whitehouse conceived the idea of inviting people living along its banks to make quilt blocks depicting their own impressions. Apart from the size of each piece, no limitations were placed on the making of the blocks, and so submissions included embroidery, appliquè, oil painting, pastel—even a photograph reproduced on cloth. Subjects included native birds, trees, early morning fog, favourite camping places and snippets of local history. Some contributors included a short explanation of their work. The web site displays about forty individual pieces, with close-ups and notes.

Oh—and I built the website.

Time   This is a link to the World Clock. Do you need to know the time in London, Amsterdam, or Brisbane? This site shows the time in cities around the world, and tells whether or not daylight saving is currently being used.

It's also possible to set up your own personal clock, nominating up to 16 cities whose times will display each time you visit.

Help with Microsoft Word The mvp (Most Valuable Professional) site has a huge number of tutorials and explanations that are much easier to follow than Word's own Help.

Each article has been written by someone with genuine expertise in the particular area and will print out beautifully. Some of the longer articles are available in free downloadable zip files.

Unicorn Bookkeeping  Annette is a fully qualified and registered BAS agent, so if your books give you that sinking feeling, her efficient help is just what you need.

Xenu Link Sleuth   Incredibly useful software for anyone with a web site. Checks the links on your local or remote site, lists broken links in such a way that you can go straight to the page and fix it.
