Butterfly caterpillars do not spin cocoons. The butterfly caterpillar, just before its last moult, attaches a patch of fine gossamer to the place where it will pupate; perhaps the underside of a leaf. It attaches itself to this, sheds its skin for the last time, and becomes a chrysalis: a hardened capsule within which the living creature will undergo great changes.
