Young grey butcher bird (Cracticus torquatus)

Previous | Next | Thumbnails

What to do? So many choices!

Beautiful songster with nasty habits, the butcher bird, just like the kookaburra and the magpie, will take the nestlings of other birds. To hear the liquid notes of a butcher bird in the vicinity of a chook yard is a signal to make sure that week-old chicks are well out of sight!

Adult grey butcher birds are coloured grey and black, but the young ones prefer to dress in brown and buff. Adults didn't come to the food tray; they were too busy eyeing off a nearby fish pond.
