We have lots of these around the place, but hardly ever see them. Stick insects are masters of disguise. The forelegs are often stretched alongside the head, making the animal look even more stick-like. If the wind is blowing, the insect will sway gently from side to side, apparently in imitation of the movement of the leves.
I've seen a large stick insect fly into a small bush and I've immediately gone to the bush and tried to find it, but it's vanished!
We brought this one indoors to get some contrast for a picture.
