Spotted pardalote with coconut fibre from hanging basket liner

This charming little bird and her mate kept my neighbours entranced for weeks. At first they were struggling hard to pull fibres from the liner of a hanging basket, until the ladies decided to rough up a bit of the fibre and leave it in a handy position.

We were never able to spot the nest, and now we know why. Reading tells us that the nest is always built in a tunnel. The most likely place to find any sort of tunnel in our area would be high in the gum trees, where some dead limbs are hollow.
