Lorikeet playing hard to see
Rainbow lorikeets, with their vividly coloured plumage, are a visual feast. Their numbers and habits, though, are less pleasing. They'll descend on a fruit-laden tree and damage every piece of fruit, fully consuming none of it. Many residents of Western Australia are unhappy that this colouful destroyer was introduced there from the eastern states to which it is indigenous.
Australia's a big country and it's a great shame that people act on the idea that because an animal or plant is an Australian native it'll be an asset in any part of the continent. Lots of problems have been caused by introducing species from one part of this vast land to another, and the prettier they are, the more likely they are to be so treated.
