Common Brown Butterfly
Male

Previous | Next | Thumbnails

Common brown butterfly, male

This one had me puzzled, because Googling for "brown butterfly" always showed a much prettier insect than this one. Now I find that males and females look quite different, and there seem to be more pictures of females.

These butterflies have been reacting to global warming. It seems that the higher the temperature, the less time the insect spends in its pupal stage, and the average time for pupation has decreased by ten days since 1945. Whether this is a bad thing for the butterfly isn't made clear, but it's certainly an indication that changes really are happening, right under our noses.
