This is fairly typical of country areas in south eastern Australia during early summer. The introduced grasses used as pasture don’t stand up well to spells of hot dry weather, and a little later in the year farmers must often resort to hand-feeding their animals. Another stratagem is to graze the “long paddock,” the green area at the sides of the road.

As the “dry” continues, grasses become parched. This presents a very real fire hazard.

Overseas tourist brochures will tell you that “there are no mountains in Australia”. If we’re talking about height above sea level we have to admit there’s some truth in this. Nevertheless, we do have some tallish rocky outcrops!
